Ålands Radio is the broadcasting company of the Aland Islands. Today, they published this:
What is the cost of being an islander?
The organization of small European islands, ESIN, will try to answer this question during the next year. Kökar resident Christian Pleijel, vice chairman of ESIN’s board, claims that life in the archipelago in many ways is more expensive than life on the mainland.
– When 98-octane petrol costs 1.86 euros on Kokar, it costs 1.61 euros on the main island and 1.19 euros on the mainland. The same goes for artisans, construction materials, studies, food, dentists and Internet: services and goods are in various ways more expensive for those who live on a small island.
Christian Pleijel represents the association Företagsam Skärgård which represents Åland before ESIN, which recently held its fifteenth annual meeting on the Greek island of Kastellorizo.
